Optimize for non-Webflow sites

Create or edit a click goal

Updated

Track clicks on buttons, links, and other interactive elements.

Click goals track when visitors click the elements you choose. You can use them to focus on the elements your optimization aims to drive engagement with (e.g., Subscribe or Contact us buttons). These goals help you measure engagement and understand how visitors interact with key elements on your site.

How click targets work

Optimize tracks element clicks with selectors, like an element's ID (#subscribe-button), class (.cta-button), or visible text. In most cases you can just click a page element using the webpage preview to set its selector. For more complex scenarios — like nested elements or repeated components — you have the option to manually enter a selector value.

Page elements can have different selectors on desktop, tablet, or mobile due to layout shifts, responsive styling, or the use of alternate elements. Use the Device dropdown (e.g., Desktop) to spot check the other layouts. If the element is not already selected in the alternate layout, simply select it to add it to your goal.

Create a click goal

Open your Optimize site in Webflow, then:

  1. Click Optimizations in the Navigation panel
  2. Click an optimization
  3. Click the Options icon > Edit Configuration
  4. Click the Goals tab
  5. Click Add goal
  6. Rename the goal (e.g., Subscribe buttons)
  7. (Optional) Click Track as site goal to make this a site goal
  8. Select Click on an element and click Continue
  9. Select a page element to target or enter a value in the Selectors field
  10. Click the Add icon to target another page element
  11. Click Create at the bottom

Optionally, set the goal as the target goal next.

Edit a click goal

Open your Optimize site in Webflow, then:

  1. Click Optimizations in the Navigation panel
  2. Click an optimization
  3. Click the Options icon > Edit Configuration
  4. Click the Goals tab
  5. Select a goal and make your edits:
    • Edit a selector — click a selector, then select a page element or replace the value
    • Add a selector — click the Add icon, then select a page element or enter a value
    • Delete a selector — hover over a selector and click the Delete icon
  6. Click Save

Good to know

To make changes to what a site goal targets, you'll need to remove it as a site goal first, make the edits, then set it as the site goal again. You can hover over a site goal and click the Options icon to rename it, set it as a target, remove it as a site goal, or delete it.

Set an existing click goal as a site goal

Important

All site goals must either have a monetary value or no monetary value. If an existing goal does not match your current site goals' value choice (a value or no value), then it can't be tracked as a site goal.

  1. Click Optimizations in the Navigation panel
  2. Click an optimization
  3. Click the Options icon > Edit Configuration
  4. Click the Goals tab
  5. Hover over a goal and click the Options icon
  6. Click Track as site goal
